Ryan Kiera Armstrong shares insights on the dynamic between Francis and her father Lee Raybon (played by Ethan Hawke) following the series finale. Warning: This contains major spoilers for Season 1, Episode 8, “The Sensitive Kind.”
The season concluded with Lee solving the mystery of Dale Washberg’s (Tim Blake Nelson) death, yet his story and relationship with Francis remained open-ended. Their bond, much like Francis’s determination, is layered with complexities not fully explored on screen.
Francis faces both physical and emotional risks linked to Lee’s profession. Armstrong reflects,
“I don’t think that she realized how big it was,”
regarding the true extent of the danger Francis faced. Nevertheless, she adds,
“I also think that she’s really intelligent for her age, and so I think that she knew something was up.”
After Lee missed a parent-teacher conference, Francis expressed her feelings through a poem at an open-mic event. The piece touched on the pain caused by her parents’ separation and especially her father's absence.
“I read it, and at first I was really moved, and then the next thought was I have to make it really good. It was also my last day on set, so I was like, I can’t regret anything, it has to be perfect.”
The finale captures the fragile but resilient connection between Francis and Lee, highlighting both the dangers of his work and the emotional scars it leaves on their family.
