The San Antonio Spurs made progress this week toward building a new downtown arena. According to Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press, Bexar County voters approved a proposal that enables local officials to allocate up to $311 million in venue taxes for the project.
“Just over 52% of voters supported the measure,” said county officials.
Despite opposition from some lawmakers and advocacy groups, the measure passed, allowing the Spurs to move forward. The team has pledged at least $500 million for construction, while the city plans to contribute approximately $489 million, bringing the total project cost to about $1.3 billion. The timeline for construction has not yet been determined.
The Spurs’ current lease at Frost Bank Center remains valid until 2032.
The Spurs advance plans for a $1.3B downtown arena while shaping a strong young core featuring Castle, Wembanyama, and Harper for future success.
