India Explains Arshdeep Singh’s Benchings Despite T20I Success
India has addressed the question of why fast bowler Arshdeep Singh is often benched, despite being the country’s leading wicket-taker in T20 internationals. Morne Morkel, India’s bowling coach, explained that with limited matches before the T20 World Cup next February, the team management wants to see how different players perform under pressure.
Arshdeep Singh’s Achievements
- Arshdeep is the only Indian bowler to have taken 100 T20I wickets, a milestone he reached during the Asia Cup.
- He currently has 104 T20I wickets, six more than the second-highest Indian wicket-taker, Jasprit Bumrah.
Recent Performances
After a period of being out of the lineup, Arshdeep returned to T20I cricket on Sunday during India’s series-levelling win against Australia in Hobart. He took three wickets for 35 runs and was named Player of the Match.
This was Arshdeep’s first game in the five-match series and his first T20I since playing against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup Super Four stage in September.
Morne Morkel’s Explanation
“It is not easy. There will always be disappointment in terms of players and selection, but that is something at times that, as a player, is uncontrollable.”
“For us, from our side, we just keep on asking them to work hard and try hard and be ready for when they do get the opportunity."
Morkel emphasized the importance of readiness as the key to seizing opportunities when they arise.
