Caledon farmer among climate activists taking CPP manager to court

Rav Singh, a vegetable farmer from Caledon, Ontario, turned from environmental education to agriculture five years ago to reconnect with her family's farming roots in India. For her, tending the land became both a cultural and ecological act, linking food production with climate justice.

“I just felt really called to connect with the land on a very deep level and to grow food for people,” Singh told The Pointer.

“I wanted to respect and acknowledge my ancestral connection to agriculture because my family, they were farmers back in India…I just really wanted to make sure that folks who were looking for ‘cultural foods’ like okra, bitter melon had the same type of choice that people have when they go to buy something like tomatoes or cucumbers.”

At twenty-seven, Singh founded her farm, Shade of Miti—the word “miti” means soil in both Hindi and Punjabi. The name reflects her belief that caring for the earth is the foundation of a healthy planet and a way to honor her ancestors’ farming heritage.
