Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that Assamese Hindus constitute about 40 per cent of the state's population, roughly equal to the Muslim population.
Sarma highlighted a significant shift in the state's demographic composition, describing the Centre's proposed Demography Mission as a "significant step" toward addressing the issue.
Assam has been a big victim of demographic change. In 2021, the Muslim population crossed 38 per cent, and as we speak, it is about 39.5 per cent of the state population.
He noted that districts like Majuli have seen a 100 per cent growth in the Muslim population.
