UC Berkeley officials have not revealed specific security measures but confirmed they are ready to host the conservative organization Turning Point USA on November 10. This event follows the assassination of the group's founder, Charlie Kirk, nearly two months ago at Utah Valley University.
Turning Point USA is a nonprofit that promotes conservative values on high school and college campuses. It was co-founded in 2012 by Charlie Kirk and his late mentor, Bill Montgomery. The upcoming Berkeley appearance is the group's first event at a California college since Kirk’s fatal shooting in September.
Kirk’s assassination has heightened worries about political violence and sparked renewed discussions about how universities can ensure campus security while upholding free speech rights.
John Paul Leon, a junior and president of Berkeley’s Turning Point USA chapter founded in 2019, shared his experience preparing for Kirk’s visit before the tragedy.
“(We’ve) been wanting Charlie for a long time,” Leon said. “I’ve been planning this since… June… It’s been a lot of work, but it’s definitely worth it.”
His statement reflects the chapter’s commitment to continuing Kirk’s mission despite the challenges they face.
The university is focused on balancing safety with the organization’s right to free expression during this high-profile event.
