Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment feels like adrenaline-fueled fan fiction inspired by Tears of Kingdom. While its plot is predictable and gameplay formulaic, the cooperative mode and stylish animation help it stand out.
The game, released Thursday, lacks subtlety. Players face a routine storyline but enjoy striking animation. Although musou style games haven't been my usual preference, this one clears my fatigued mind like a refreshing breeze.
The Legend of Zelda series on Nintendo Switch is praised for its mix of exploration, puzzles, and combat. However, Hyrule Warriors spin-offs focus solely on combat, turning up the intensity while sacrificing the thoughtful elements that define the franchise. Bombastic battles and dazzling special attacks take center stage.
For me, as a new father with limited gaming time, Age of Imprisonment fits well into my sleep-deprived schedule better than the demanding Hollow Knight: Silksong. Its quick four-to-20-minute battles provide a welcome gaming break.
“Age of Imprisonment may as well be fan fiction.”
Don’t expect much depth in story or surprising elements. The experience is closer to the horde-style action of Vampire Survivors than the original Zelda games.
This spin-off balances brainless fun with cathartic gameplay, making it an enjoyable, if shallow, retreat for those seeking quick bursts of action without narrative complexity.
Author’s summary: Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment delivers fast-paced combat and stylish visuals, trading deep storytelling for quick, satisfying battles ideal for short gaming sessions.
