I'd not used my PlayStation Portal in a year, but now Sony's new update has arrived I can't put it down

The New PS Portal Update Revitalizes the Handheld

When I first reviewed the PlayStation Portal two years ago, I praised its potential and noted, "If it had access to cloud gaming too, it'd be better still." Now, after some time, Sony’s major update has fully delivered on that promise, transforming the device completely.

Expanded Cloud Gaming Features

Sony initially introduced cloud gaming support for the Portal a year ago, but only as a beta feature for a limited selection of games. The latest update brings the device out of beta and significantly expands this feature. You can now play hundreds of games over the cloud without needing to connect the Portal to a PS5 or PS5 Pro console.

From my experience, gameplay through cloud streaming is mostly free of lag, allowing a smooth gaming experience.

Access to a Vast Game Library

The update introduces streaming support for a large portion of the purchased games in your collection. Sony claims that over a thousand titles are supported, available through a new "Your Library" section. You can select any game, and it will eventually load for play.

Personal Collection and Performance

As a games and tech writer, I have an extensive collection of PS5 and classic games. I found it hard to spot many missing titles from the supported list. Right after updating my Portal and enabling the feature, more than 100 games from my own collection were available, including many I had forgotten about over the years.

Sony states more than a thousand titles are now supported in the cloud gaming library.

Author’s summary: The latest PlayStation Portal update unlocks extensive cloud gaming access and a vast library, turning a once underused device into an engaging handheld gaming experience.
