Hungary to Allow Putin Entry for Summit with Trump
Hungary will ensure Russian President Vladimir Putin can enter Budapest for a planned summit with US President Donald Trump, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto confirmed on Friday.
Legal Challenges and Political Stance
Putin currently faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes. Despite this, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced earlier in April that Hungary intends to withdraw from the ICC. Orbán has also hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Budapest, who is under an ICC warrant for war crimes related to Gaza.
The Hungarian government maintains that ICC arrest warrants will not be recognized on its soil.
Summit Details and Diplomatic Talks
Trump revealed on Thursday his plan to meet Putin in Budapest to discuss opportunities for ending the war in Ukraine. Foreign Minister Szijjarto stated that the summit dates depend on forthcoming meetings between US and Russian foreign ministers expected next week.
