Cloud streaming becomes available on the PlayStation Portal today, allowing players to enjoy games directly on the handheld without needing to connect it to a PlayStation 5 console. This marks a significant milestone two years after the device’s original release and following a year-long beta phase.
According to the official PlayStation blog, Sony confirmed that cloud streaming will roll out for all users with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. This update finally allows the device to operate independently from a console, bringing the Portal closer to being a successor to the PSP.
At launch in 2023, the PlayStation Portal received criticism for its limited capabilities and need to stay connected to a PS5. Earlier handhelds like the PSP and PS Vita offered standalone gameplay, while the Portal initially functioned more like an accessory for remote play than a true console.
“The portable machine is not strictly playing them all by itself, and you do need a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription to do it, but the latest system update brings the PlayStation Portal a lot closer to being a true PSP successor.”
The PlayStation Portal finally gains full cloud gaming support, freeing it from PS5 dependency and marking Sony’s biggest handheld upgrade in years.
