Former NFL star Antonio Brown, 37, has been arrested on an attempted murder charge related to a shooting incident that occurred after a celebrity boxing event in Miami. Police confirmed the arrest Thursday.
According to Miami police spokesman Mike Vega, Brown was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Dubai and then flown to Essex County, New Jersey. He is currently being detained there and awaiting extradition to Miami. Authorities did not explain why he was first taken to New Jersey or specify how long he had stayed in Dubai, though Brown had recently posted several times from there on social media.
Brown’s NFL career included a short and controversial period with the New England Patriots in 2019. He played one game before being released amid multiple allegations of rape, sexual assault, and harassment. His brief presence on the team drew significant media and public attention.
The arrest warrant states that the incident took place on May 16, following a boxing match. Brown allegedly seized a handgun from a security officer and fired two shots at a man he had previously fought with during the event.
“One of the bullets grazed his neck,” said the victim, identified as Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, in a statement to investigators.
As of now, court records do not list a defense attorney for Brown, and officials have not confirmed when he will be returned to Miami.
Antonio Brown was arrested in Dubai and now faces extradition to Miami over an attempted murder charge linked to a post-boxing event shooting.
