Jacob Elordi reveals first reaction to challenging 'Frankenstein' role

Jacob Elordi shared that he initially hesitated before accepting the role of The Creature in Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein. Although eager to collaborate with the acclaimed filmmaker, he admitted that he worried the part might involve playing a nonverbal character.

"The only thought that I can remember having before I'd even gotten the script was that, and I shouldn't have doubted it, knowing Guillermo, but was that the Creature may be nonverbal and may be so sort of conceptual and hidden under this thing,"

Elordi, known for his roles in Saltburn and Euphoria, reflected on these doubts during an episode of Entertainment Weekly’s The Awardist podcast.

"Obviously, there's always a performance in those creatures, but just that I wouldn't be able to maybe articulate the sort of existential crisis that the Creature's having."

However, those concerns vanished once he began reading del Toro’s script.

"As soon as I read the script and he said, 'Now, I'll tell you my tale,' and I realised there was still this much script to go."

Elordi praised the script’s faithfulness to Mary Shelley's original novel, noting the adaptation captures the essence of the character and story.

"I was like, oh, wow, this is the Creature as it is in Mary Shelley's text."

Author's Summary

Jacob Elordi initially feared The Creature in del Toro’s Frankenstein would be silent, but reading the script eased his doubts and impressed him with its faithful depth.
