Artist Collaborations and Portraits

Jennifer Lawrence admits she isn’t skilled at drawing, except for a simple horse head in profile, which she can create with childlike ease. This detail emerged during her interview for W Magazine’s Art Issue, a project that since 2006 has showcased prominent figures through the eyes of contemporary artists.

Previous issues highlighted Mickalene Thomas photographing Cardi B, Barbara Kruger adding text over a nude Kim Kardashian, and George Clooney interacting with the polka dot world of Yayoi Kusama. In this edition, Lawrence is painted by Elizabeth Peyton, photographed by Wolfgang Tillmans, and interpreted by Philippe Parreno. Each artist contributed a unique cover and perspective on the 35-year-old actor.

Editorial Vision

“We wanted to work with artists who approached portraiture in different ways and who worked in different mediums. Of course, it was also important that we connected to them on a personal level,” said Sara Moonves, editor in chief at W Magazine.
“Each of them approached the collaboration differently, but with great commitment and care."

These portraits reflect a fresh and varied artistic dialogue with Jennifer Lawrence, highlighting her versatility as a contemporary muse.
