The landmark crossing over the Fraser River is finally nearing completion after considerable delays, transforming how commuters travel between Surrey and New Westminster. Provincial officials now anticipate the new Pattullo Bridge will open by late 2025—almost two years later than planned.
The modern four-lane cable-stayed bridge will replace the original 1937 truss structure that has long connected Surrey and New Westminster across one of British Columbia’s busiest commuter routes. The new bridge aims to improve road safety, traffic flow, and regional connectivity.
The project is managed by the provincial Transportation Investment Corp., which in 2020 awarded the design-build-finance contract to Fraser Crossing Partners, a collaboration between Aecon Group Inc. and Acciona Infrastructure Canada Inc.
Initially, construction was expected to begin in spring 2020 and wrap up by 2023. However, the pandemic and related disruptions—especially in steel and cable production—caused significant delays, extending the schedule by nearly two years.
At the financial close, the project was valued at approximately $1.05 billion. Provincial updates now estimate the total cost to be around $1.22 billion, reflecting adjustments for inflation and currency fluctuations.
“The replacement of the Pattullo Bridge marks a major infrastructure milestone for British Columbia, promising safer, more efficient travel across the Fraser River.”
The new Pattullo Bridge, delayed by the pandemic and supply issues, is set to open in late 2025, modernizing a key Fraser River link between Surrey and New Westminster.
