San Antonio has increased its local production expenditure rebate to 10%, up from the previous 7.5%, aiming to attract more film, television, and commercial projects to the city. Additionally, productions that hire local cast, crew, and military veterans can receive an extra 2% rebate.
The City Council approved the new incentive program on Thursday to respond to growing demand for film permits and to boost the local entertainment economy. The program is designed to bring more productions and the revenue they generate to San Antonio.
San Antonio officials claim their incentives are now the most competitive in Texas.
The film rebate is funded through $250,000 allocated from the hotel occupancy tax fund, which remains unchanged though more productions can now apply for these funds. The incentives now also extend to commercials in addition to movies, TV episodes, documentaries, and music videos, aligning with state-level film incentive policies.
The SAFI program includes a workforce development aspect requiring productions to offer local workshops, internships, jobs, or training opportunities for residents and students to qualify for the rebate.
"Productions have to include local workshops, intern or job opportunities or other training for local students and residents to receive their incentive."
Author’s summary: San Antonio has enhanced its film incentives by raising rebates and adding workforce development requirements to attract more productions and boost the local economy.
