At MWC Kigali 2025 in Rwanda, GSMA's Head of Africa, Angela Wamola, discussed the primary policy directions African nations should pursue to promote digital inclusion. Key themes included making smartphones more affordable and developing inclusive artificial intelligence models tailored to African languages and needs.
Wamola outlined a coalition involving the GSMA and six of Africa’s largest mobile operators that aims to reduce the price of entry-level 4G smartphones, enabling more people to connect to digital services affordably.
She emphasized the importance of ensuring AI systems reflect Africa’s linguistic and cultural diversity. Developing local AI language models, she argued, would empower African creators and foster more relevant online content.
“Inclusive artificial intelligence isn't just a technological goal, it's a social necessity that ensures Africans see themselves represented in digital innovation,” said Angela Wamola.
Wamola also discussed future investments in Africa’s telecom sector leading up to 2030. She highlighted that energy resilience is closely tied to the industry's capacity for sustainable growth and innovation.
