This is the way it is: How Ita is coping with a life-changing condition

Ita, 83 years old, remains positive despite uncertainty about her health. After undergoing back surgery in 2021, she began experiencing symptoms that led to a diagnosis of isolated gait disorder.

Adjusting to new challenges

Since the surgery, Ita has not been able to walk properly and now relies on a wheelchair. She explained,

“I haven't walked properly since the back surgery.”

Although doctors are unsure whether the surgery caused her condition or if it will worsen, she has adapted to being dependent on others for mobility.

Maintaining a positive outlook

Rather than focusing on limitations, Ita highlights the benefits she has gained, such as no longer feeling back pain. She said,

“I can either feel sorry for myself and do nothing, or I can take control of my life, as I always have.”

Frustrations and reflections

Ita acknowledges her frustration, especially over the lack of funding for research into her illness. She observes,

“Life is full of detours.”

Personal achievements

Despite challenges, Ita has completed her twelfth book, Unapologetically Ita, her second memoir and the first written without balancing a full-time job. She found writing to be a joyful escape, saying,

“It was a relief to write a book and discover how much fun it is when you don't have to keep leaving it to go back to the job you do.”

Summary: Ita demonstrates resilience and optimism by adapting to her condition, focusing on positives, and continuing her passion for writing despite new life challenges.
