Lucy Liu is embracing a fresh look with her new lob haircut, showcased in her upcoming drama Rosemead. The Charlie's Angels alum sports a short, side-parted style just above her collarbone in the film’s trailer.
The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in June and is set for theatrical release on December 5. It centers on Irene (played by Liu) and her son Joe (Lawrence Shou), exploring their challenges after Joe’s schizophrenia diagnosis.
Rosemead is inspired by a 2017 Los Angeles Times article by Frank Shyong, titled “A dying mother's plan: Buy a gun. Kill her son.”
This project marks a notable shift for Liu, moving away from her typical action and light-hearted roles in productions like Ally McBeal, Watching the Detectives, and Why Women Kill.
“As there was not a lot that was known about this family, the script had to be pieced together,” Liu told Variety. “In some ways, it’s a little bit of a thriller, because people know the final act and some of the details, and then the rest had to be kind of filled in, in order to understand the dynamic between Irene and her son.”
At the Tribeca premiere, Liu also discussed her deep interest in roles like this during an interview with Parade.
Lucy Liu’s new dramatic role in Rosemead showcases her evolving career and a bold new hairstyle, highlighting her range beyond action-packed characters.
