The Panthers women’s soccer team concluded a challenging season with a stunning victory over No. 1 Notre Dame at Ambrose Urbanic Field last week. The decisive goal came in the 85th minute off a late corner from senior forward Margaret Wilde, when junior defender Mya Archibald headed the ball cleanly inside the left post to give Pitt the lead.
Notre Dame only needed a win or a draw to secure the ACC regular-season title, with the trophy notably positioned under Ambrose Urbanic Field awaiting them. However, Pitt, facing a tough season, demonstrated resilience and determination, refusing to watch the trophy presentation on their home field.
“A team that had put up eight goals in a single match earlier this season was held scoreless by an underdog Pitt squad.”
This victory marks the first time in Pitt women’s soccer history that they have defeated a No. 1 ranked team.
The Panthers did not have the season many expected, finishing with a 6-10-2 overall record and only two wins in ACC play. They struggled to maintain consistency in one of the nation’s most competitive women’s soccer conferences.
Pitt women’s soccer closed a difficult season on a high note by defeating No. 1 Notre Dame for the first time ever, showcasing grit and standout defensive effort.
