Daniel Day-Lewis Says Brian Cox Dragged Him Into Method Actor Debate, Denies Claim That He Taught Jeremy Strong: ‘I Don’t Feel Responsible in Any Way’ for How Strong Acts on Set

Daniel Day-Lewis Denies Responsibility for Jeremy Strong’s Method Acting

Daniel Day-Lewis recently addressed Brian Cox’s comments linking him to the ongoing debate about Method acting. In an interview with the U.K.’s Big Issue, Day-Lewis said Cox has partly drawn him into a conversation he never intended to join.

“Listen, I worked with Brian Cox once and got somehow drawn into this handbags-at-dawn conflict inadvertently,”

Day-Lewis told Big Issue, adding that he respects Cox as an actor who’s produced remarkable performances but noted that Cox “shows no sign of climbing down” from his public criticisms.

Cox has repeatedly called out Method acting in interviews, labeling it “fucking annoying,” and often uses his “Succession” co-star Jeremy Strong as an example. He has also speculated that Day-Lewis left acting at 55 due to exhaustion from the Method approach.

“Brian is a very fine actor who’s done extraordinary work. As a result, he’s been given a soapbox… Any time he wants to talk about it, I’m easy to find.”

Day-Lewis Rejects Cox’s Claims About Jeremy Strong

In a previous Variety interview, Cox claimed that Jeremy Strong’s dedication to Method acting came from having worked as Day-Lewis’s assistant. “So he’s learned all that stuff from Dan,” Cox said.

“If I thought during our work together I’d interfered with his working process, I’d be appalled,”

Day-Lewis responded, clarifying that he never influenced Strong’s methods. “But I don’t think it was like that. So I don’t know where that came from,” he added.

Author’s Summary

Daniel Day-Lewis dismissed Brian Cox’s suggestion that he shaped Jeremy Strong’s acting approach, emphasizing his respect for Cox yet rejecting the link between them in the Method acting debate.
