Jay Som is the musical project of Melina Duterte, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. She will release her new album Belong on November 7. Ahead of the album launch, Jay Som shared the track "Past Lives," featuring Hayley Williams from Paramore.
The collaboration came about when the artists met in Nashville to write a song with Steph Marziano. Williams' soft harmonies on the sweeping "Past Lives" enhance the song's poignant feeling of drifting through highs and lows, gaining momentum only to see it fade away. The track is powerful, with a downshifted midsection that feels like an internal struggle.
“It’s a dream come true to have Hayley sing on my first feature on an album before the recording of ‘Float,’ I still can’t believe it happened,” Duterte says of the collaboration. “She’s one of the kindest artists out there and she graciously accepts and uplifts the people around her. We’re all so lucky to witness her talent and live on the same timeline as her.”
The album Belong also features contributions from Joao Gonzalez (Soft Glas), Mal Hauser (Mk.gee, Illuminati Hotties), Steph Marziano (producer for Vundabar, Hot Wax, Sir Chloe), and Kyle Pulley. For the first time, Jay Som includes guest vocalists on the record.
Belong marks an evolution in Jay Som’s sound, highlighting meaningful collaborations and emotional depth.
