Sam Smith shared on the Podcrushed podcast that they underwent liposuction surgery at the age of 13 after facing severe bullying at secondary school about their weight. The singer, who identifies as non-binary and uses gender-neutral pronouns, said their weight, rather than their queerness, was the toughest challenge during their teenage years.
During their time at a Catholic high school in Hertfordshire, Sam was frequently teased about their weight. This led to difficulty participating in activities like swimming and changing in the locker room, making school life very distressing.
Sam explained their decision to have liposuction on their chest:
"I had surgery on my chest when I was 13 years old, because I had a growing chest. There were all sorts of reasons why, but mainly, I was just getting so teased, I couldn't go swimming in school, and I couldn't — like, getting changed in the locker room was hell. So I got liposuction when I was 13 years old."
The singer also noted their parents were very supportive of the surgery because they saw how much the teasing affected their well-being:
"They just saw how much it was crippling everything about me."
However, the surgery did not fully resolve the issue, as Sam admitted their love of food continued to be a challenge.
Sam Smith underwent liposuction at 13 after harsh bullying over their weight, supported by their parents, but continued to struggle with related challenges.
