‘It is time to step away’: Popular Salem restaurant closing after 7 years

The Derby Restaurant & Bar, a staple in downtown Salem, announced it will close on Monday, December 1, as new management takes over. After nearly seven years, the restaurant will cease operations.

In a Facebook post, the restaurant expressed gratitude:

“After almost 7 years and enough memories to last a lifetime, it is time to step away. We want to send out a special thank you to all of those that have supported us throughout our journey and make sure we thank ALL of the stellar members of our team for all they have done to make The Derby a success.”

The post also noted the close relationships formed over the years:

“We have worked with some truly remarkable people that we consider friends and family and will always cherish the relationships The Derby has injected into our lives. Thank you for making the last 7 years so special!”

The Derby is assisting current staff in finding new jobs. Originally opened in 2019, the restaurant faced significant challenges during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic but, with community support, recovered and became known for hosting drag brunches, Kentucky Derby viewing parties, Sunday football gatherings, and more.

Before closing, The Derby plans “a ton of great events” to thank the community for its support.
