Typhoon Uwan is rapidly intensifying as it approaches the Philippines, raising alarms about destructive winds, heavy rains, and potentially life-threatening conditions. Forecasters indicate it may become one of the most powerful storms of the year.
Known currently as Fung-wong, the storm recently strengthened into a severe tropical storm and is nearing the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). As of Friday, it was positioned 1,470 kilometres east of Eastern Visayas, just outside the PAR boundary.
Upon entering the PAR, expected by midnight or early Saturday, the storm will be renamed Uwan, meaning "rain" in Cebuano. It is forecast to potentially make landfall near or at peak intensity over Northern or Central Luzon on 10 November 2025.
Disaster officials have urged residents along the storm’s path to prepare in advance, expressing concern over the storm's rapid strengthening. Meteorologists warn that Uwan could produce severe, life-threatening weather across large parts of Luzon.
Early warnings will likely be issued Saturday morning for eastern Luzon and the Visayas.
