Dennis Hildeby is expected to make his season debut for the Toronto Maple Leafs soon. After goaltender Cayden Primeau was placed on waivers and Joseph Woll was sent to the Marlies on a conditioning stint, Hildeby will back up Anthony Stolarz in the team's upcoming game against the Boston Bruins.
Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube confirmed that Anthony Stolarz will start his 12th game of the season against the Bruins. With Woll temporarily assigned to the Marlies, it was unnecessary for Hildeby to remain there as a backup. The decision to place Primeau on waivers came after his three games with the Leafs, where his performance raised concerns.
“The 26-year-old Primeau went 2-1-0 in three starts with a .838 save percentage in his three starts with the Leafs.”
Before this call-up, Hildeby was backing up in Primeau's overtime win against the Buffalo Sabres. The 24-year-old has a 2-2-1 record this season with an .890 save percentage playing with the Marlies. In the preseason, he posted a strong .920 save percentage over three games during training camp.
Although not officially announced, it seems likely Hildeby will get the start when the Leafs host the Carolina Hurricanes on November 10. Due to back-to-back games, the Leafs are unlikely to start Stolarz in consecutive matches.
“Given the slate of games on back-to-back nights, it's highly unlikely the Leafs would entertain the thought of starting Stolarz on consecutive days.”
Author's summary: Dennis Hildeby is poised to step into a greater role for the Maple Leafs, potentially starting soon due to recent goalie roster changes and strategic rest for Anthony Stolarz.
