Who's Gonna Make the Gravy Now? We Ask Master Storyteller Paul Kelly

Paul Kelly reflected on the origins and emotional depth of one of his most enduring ballads, sharing how a simple fictional letter grew into a poignant narrative of family, loss, and memory.

A Story That Began With a Funeral

It all started with a funeral notice published in The Age newspaper on August 11, 2025:

"With great sorrow, we announce the death of Joe by sudden misadventure. Much-loved father, husband, brother, brother-in-law and uncle to Dan, Rita, Stella, Roger, Mary, Angus, Frank and Dolly."

The message described Joe as someone who embraced life with energy and joy. He loved music, food, football, celebration, and lively conversation. Friends remembered him cooking for large family gatherings, with pots simmering, a barbecue smoking outside, and a glass of wine in hand—his favorite reggae music playing in the background.

Everyone recalled how he would refill drinks, playfully tease the kids, and bring warmth to every occasion.

"Christmas just won't be the same this year without you. But we know you'll always be with us, hovering above us, floating all around us, making sure we get it right."

The funeral and service were scheduled for August 14, followed by what was promised to be “a wake to end all wakes.”

The Song That Started It All

Kelly first introduced Joe to listeners through his famous song How To Make Gravy, inspired by a letter from Joe to his brother Dan. Written on December 21, 1996, from prison, Joe’s letter expressed fear of losing his wife, Rita, and their children — and his regret that no one would be there to make gravy for Christmas.

A New Chapter: Rita’s Voice

Nearly three decades later, Paul Kelly returned to the story. On August 15, 2025, he released Rita Wrote A Letter, a long-awaited sequel told from Rita’s point of view—a continuation of Joe’s heartfelt family saga.

Author’s Summary
