Renowned Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly marks a milestone in his career with the release of his new album Seventy. Out today, the record reflects on a life fully lived while continuing Kelly’s bold exploration of the human experience.
The album features the standout track Rita Wrote a Letter, a continuation of the story from Kelly’s 1996 classic How to Make Gravy. This time, the narrative shifts to Rita’s perspective, offering a fresh emotional depth to a familiar tale.
“I’ve been mulling over the idea of a sequel to ‘How to Make Gravy’ from Rita’s point of view for quite some time,” Kelly said. “About five years ago I wrote down the words, ‘Rita wrote a letter,’ and thought, ‘There’s my title.’”
The song’s lyrics carry Kelly’s trademark combination of sharp insight and emotional weight, revealing humor and heartbreak in equal measure.
Another highlight of Seventy is Happy Birthday, Ada Mae, paired with a touching music video directed by Kelly’s daughter, Maddy Kelly, and featuring his two-year-old granddaughter Ada Mae. The song is a heartfelt meditation on love and family legacy.
“In the end, love is all of us that remains,” Kelly reflects. “It’s a joy working with my daughter and granddaughter. Three generations in one little song.”
The album’s themes of reflection, connection, and continuity make it a personal yet universal addition to Kelly’s enduring body of work.
Paul Kelly’s album Seventy blends personal reflection with family collaboration, exploring love, legacy, and the deep continuity of human experience through music.
