Two Buildings at Olympia Place Deemed Total Loss Following Weekend Fire

A fire broke out at the Olympia Place apartment complex in Amherst on the night of Friday, November 7. Fire Chief Lindsay Stromgren reported that the blaze was finally under control by 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, although some parts of the buildings at #47 and #57 Olympia Drive were still burning.

Due to the instability of the buildings, fire crews were unable to enter and fought the fire from the outside. Demolition teams worked to tear down portions of the structure to allow firefighters access to remaining hotspots.

The state task force and mutual aid units were released by 4 p.m. Saturday. Amherst Fire crews continued to operate on site, supported by a ladder truck from Greenfield. Fire suppression and demolition were expected to conclude by Sunday morning.

Amherst Fire will maintain presence at the location until the property owners secure the area with fencing.

Fire Chief Lindsay Stromgren said, "Due to the building being unstable, fire crews are not able to enter the building and continue to work from the exterior."

The fire investigation is being conducted by the State Fire Marshal’s office, Amherst Fire Department, and Amherst Police Department.

Summary: A weekend fire at Olympia Place in Amherst caused total loss to two apartment buildings, with ongoing efforts to extinguish the blaze and secure the site while investigations proceed.
