Ian Leavers, Queensland’s cross-border commissioner, has passed away at his home. Police found him at approximately 9:50 AM, with the death not considered suspicious, though investigations continue.
Premier David Crisafulli said, "Leavers has been a strong voice for the challenges facing communities and businesses along the state’s borders during a critical stage of rebuilding following the impact of the COVID pandemic."
He added, "Ian earned the respect of Queenslanders for saying it how it was, and always standing up for the police service he loved. He was dedicated, principled, and driven to make a difference for this state. Queenslanders will remember his leadership during some of our state’s most tragic and defining events."
Leavers was appointed as cross-border commissioner in October of the previous year, where he supported Queensland border communities. His role came after a distinguished career in the Queensland Police Service and as a trade unionist.
His decades of service left a significant impact on policing and the state of Queensland.
