Ian Leavers, former president of the Queensland Police Union, has been found dead at his Brisbane residence. He was 57 years old.
Leavers led the police union for 15 years, from 2009 until 2024. Following this role, he was appointed as Queensland’s first Cross-Border Commissioner in August 2024, a position aimed at supporting border communities.
Leavers was found deceased just before 10 a.m. on Monday at Mount Ommaney in Brisbane’s south-west. Police described the circumstances as non-suspicious and have ongoing investigations.
“Police investigations in relation to this matter are ongoing,” a police spokesperson said.
Premier David Crisafulli praised Leavers, saying, “He earned the respect of Queenslanders for saying it how it was, and always standing up for the police service he loved.”
“He was dedicated, principled and driven to make a difference for this state. Queenslanders will remember his leadership during some of our state’s most tragic and defining events,” Crisafulli added.
The Police Federation of Australia described Leavers as a “long-serving and respected leader within the policing community for more than three decades.”
