Senator Jacky Rosen (D-Nevada) has accused Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) of “creepily” spying on congressional vehicles. She claims Moreno followed senators to their cars and recorded their vehicle identification numbers (VINs) to make a point about driving safety legislation.
“Instead of @berniemoreno creepily following us to the cars we use to get to work in the Capitol and writing down their VIN numbers, I’d suggest he use his time in more productive ways,” Rosen tweeted on Wednesday.
This accusation arose during a tense Senate Commerce Committee hearing. Moreno admitted to collecting VIN numbers from Democratic senators' vehicles to highlight what he called the Democrats’ “hypocrisy” regarding safety technology mandates.
“I object to you stalking my car and my staff to find the VIN numbers to present to this committee,” Rosen stated during the hearing.
In response, Moreno pointed out that VINs are visible through the car windshield. He argued this justified his actions as part of his critique that the Democratic senators’ cars lacked the optional driver-assistance features they promote for federal workers’ vehicles.
The controversy highlights political tensions as Sen. Rosen accuses Sen. Moreno of invasive tactics to challenge safety rules, while Moreno defends his actions as transparency about lawmakers’ vehicle features.
