The Rajasthan Transport Department has suspended Dausa RTO officer Jagdish Amrawat on November 24 following suspicions of involvement in a major VIP vehicle number fraud. The investigation revealed that 257 VIP registration numbers from the RSS to RNX series were sold at undervalued prices to brokers, who then resold them for several lakhs.
Officials discovered that brokers obtained these premium registration numbers at base cost through manipulation of official records. These numbers were later auctioned privately at exorbitant rates, often reaching between ₹2–3 lakhs per plate.
When the RTO office was asked to produce records for verification, officials reportedly claimed that the relevant files had been burnt, raising deeper concerns about evidence tampering.
A special inquiry team is now examining the roles of RTO personnel who may have facilitated the fraud. The department is reviewing digital transaction logs, registration ledgers, and auction paperwork to trace accountability.
According to sources, some employees might face suspension or legal prosecution depending on the investigation outcomes.
Local citizens and transport unions have demanded stricter oversight of the online and offline auction processes for VIP numbers. The incident exposes potential loopholes in the vehicle registration system that make it vulnerable to insider manipulation.
Authorities in Jaipur confirmed that similar reviews will be launched across other regional transport offices to prevent recurrence.
“Brokers purchased these numbers at nominal rates and sold them for lakhs. It’s a clear violation of auction policy,” a senior transport officer said.
