Numerous South Florida Defending State Boys Basketball Champs Have Holes to Fill

South Florida Teams Face Roster Challenges After Dominant Season

South Florida high school basketball programs once again showcased their strength last season, dominating the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) state tournaments. However, many of the region’s defending champions enter the new season with significant roster gaps to address after graduating key players.

Chaminade-Madonna Looks to Maintain Momentum

Chaminade-Madonna, last year’s Class 3A state champion, lost several core contributors who played crucial roles in its title run. Head coach Malcolm White is working to rebuild chemistry with newer, younger players while relying on returning star guards to anchor the team’s offense.

“We’re confident in our system, but it’s going to take time for everyone to gel,” said White. “We plan to compete for another deep playoff run.”

Sagemont and St. Andrew’s Face Transition

Sagemont, the reigning Class 2A champion, saw multiple seniors move on to college programs, leaving the coaching staff with the task of integrating underclassmen into higher-pressure roles. Similarly, St. Andrew’s School, which captured the 3A crown in 2024, faces its own retooling phase after losing several all-county players.

Both programs remain optimistic, emphasizing player development and strong preseason preparation as keys to staying competitive.

Rebuilding Programs Across the Region

Other prominent teams, including Westminster Academy and Miami Christian, also face turnover after their successful runs. Coaches across South Florida point to the importance of depth and leadership in navigating this transitional period.

Despite the changes, expectations remain high for Broward and Palm Beach County programs, which have built a reputation as consistent state contenders. The upcoming season will test how well these teams adapt to new dynamics while maintaining their championship-caliber standards.

Author’s summary: South Florida’s reigning boys basketball state champions enter the season rebuilding key rosters, but strong programs and coaching keep expectations high.
