In a video message, Pope Leo asked every Catholic parish to observe World Mission Sunday on Oct. 19 and take up the annual collection supporting Catholic missionary work.

Pope Leo served in the missions in Peru from 1985 to 1999 and later as bishop of Chiclayo from 2014 to 2023.
