The idea for the MVP gimmick in WWE was inspired by an NFL star, as revealed by former WWE creative team member Andrew Goldstein.
Goldstein spoke to Conrad Thompson of AdFreeShows.com on The Insiders podcast, discussing how Dusty Rhodes came up with the concept.
“You could just see the wheel spinning, I mean, the best example of that is MVP”
Goldstein explained that MVP was in developmental at the time, with a rudimentary version of his character. The inspiration came from the NFL, specifically Terrell Owens of the Eagles.
The combination of a full body suit and sports-styled presentation resulted in the MVP gimmick, which became a notable character in WWE, played by the former US Champion and current AEW star.
