Jasmine Paolini, who upset Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals, was defeated by Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-3 in the semi-finals.
Sabalenka's loss marked her first defeat at the Wuhan Open since the 2023 WTA Finals.
