Refurbishment of Electrostar Trains
A £100 million project to refurbish over 300 Electrostar trains used across the Govia Thameslink (GTR) network has been completed.
The project, which took five years to finish, is considered the largest fleet upgrade in modern times. What makes it unusual is that all the work was carried out in-house by GTR staff at the Selhurst depot.
- The train operator: GTR
- The train builder: Bombardier (now Alstom)
- The train owners: Porterbrook
Normally, train overhauls involve multiple companies, but for this project, GTR decided to bring the job in-house.
No single train was sent off-site for refurbishment.
Author's summary: A £100 million project refurbished 300 trains in-house.
