To commemorate 100 years of movies, Liberty Hall will host a screening of "Phantom of the Opera" with live piano accompaniment, reviving its role as an opera house.
The building initially opened as a movie theater in the 1924-1925 season, according to documentation. Earlier this year, Liberty Hall launched a series to mark its centennial, screening a different 1925 silent movie each month.
The October selection is "Phantom of the Opera" (1925), directed by Rupert Julian and starring Lon Chaney and Mary Philbin. The black-and-white horror film will be enhanced by Liberty Hall's history as the Bowersock Opera House.
The building was renovated in 1882 by Bowersock before it burned down in an electrical fire in 1911, as noted by the Spencer Research Library.
