Cost and Housing: Top Reasons for Pet Surrenders in Parksville
The BC SPCA in Parksville-Qualicum Beach took in 43 stray and surrendered animals from Parksville in 2024, with 25 being stray and the rest surrendered.
According to Janelle Hill, centre manager,
stray animals also include abandoned animals
, which are included in the statistic.
The two primary reasons for pet surrenders are:
- inability to afford expenses, with
many people making the difficult decision to surrender their animals because they can’t afford the vet care that is needed
- housing issues, including moving or eviction, and inability to find pet-friendly housing
