What Your DNA Says About Cannabis Use and Mental Health
Scientists at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, in collaboration with 23andMe, have identified new links between cannabis use and specific genes in our DNA.
Their findings, published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, shed light on why some individuals are more prone to cannabis use or developing cannabis use disorder (CUD), which can impact daily life.
Cannabis, also known as marijuana, is widely used globally, but not everyone who tries it becomes addicted. According to experts, approximately 30% of cannabis users may develop cannabis use disorder.
Researchers analyzed genetic data from over 130,000 23andMe users who participated in scientific research to better understand the role of genetics in this risk.
No one becomes addicted to cannabis.
Author's summary: Genetic links to cannabis use and mental health have been discovered.
- Cannabis use disorder affects approximately 30% of users.
- Genetic data from 130,000 people was analyzed in the study.
