Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos hailed Timor-Leste's formal admission into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a "historic milestone" that strengthens the region's pursuit of unity and shared prosperity.

Timor-Leste is the 11th member of ASEAN, opening up a market of more than 670 million people. The country's accession was formalized during the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur.
