Challenges in Implementing Tobacco Control Policies in Africa
African countries face unique challenges in implementing tobacco control policies, according to Sahan Lungu, an expert in global Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) initiatives.
“The unique challenges faced by African countries to effectively implement tobacco control policies and programmes include limited resource and structural capacity,”
Lungu, who is THR-Malawi Programmes Coordinator, notes that these challenges result in a lack of robust smoking cessation programmes, making it difficult for smokers to access screening, diagnosis, advice, and evidence-based cessation aids and support.
