Environmental Concerns at Beaches
A reporter has highlighted the issue of thoughtlessly discarded cigarette butts on beaches, stating that it "is really damaging".
Visitors to beaches, such as Duck Lake, often fail to dispose of their trash properly, including small items like cigarette butts and plastics, which can easily become lost in the sand and contaminate nearby water.
According to WDET, Duck Lake is connected to Lake Michigan through a small channel, making it a recipient of the larger lake's trash during high waters and windy conditions. As the water recedes, the plastic remains, often getting stuck in the grass on the sides of the channel.
A reporter from WDET, Lester Graham, found 158 cigarette butts in just one hour while covering a story on microplastics at Duck Lake for the third time.
