Nassau Police Officer Ian Fogarty Honored by County Legislature

Ian Fogarty, a Nassau County police officer from Sayville, was recognized for rescuing two teens caught in a riptide at Cupsogue Beach County Park this past summer.

Brave Rescue at Cupsogue Beach

On July 16, Fogarty was visiting the park with his wife, Kristen, and their three children when he noticed eight boys swimming offshore. Two 16-year-olds were caught in the strong current about 100 yards from shore.

Armed with only a boogie board, the off-duty officer swam out to them and helped both teens safely return to land.

Recognition and Honor

For his courageous actions, Fogarty was honored by the Nassau County Legislature for his "selfless valor" and was named the “Top Cop” for September.

“It just looked like it was something that could go wrong very quickly,” said Fogarty, 38.
