The Supreme Court of Canada dismissed the final appeal against an order to cull a flock of ostriches at a farm in Edgewood, British Columbia. This ruling removes all legal obstacles for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to carry out the planned depopulation.
The CFIA confirmed it will proceed with the complete removal of the ostrich flock. Although the exact methods to be used are not specified, CFIA guidelines include options such as breaking necks, lethal injection, gassing, or shooting.
Supporters at the farm formed a prayer circle as co-owner Dave Bilinski shared news of the Supreme Court’s decision. He expressed hope, saying,
“Maybe a miracle will happen yet.”
Some protesters criticized the CFIA harshly, with one calling them “criminals” and threatening to leave Canada, while another described the decision as “disgusting.” The group prayed for a “miracle Thursday.”
People had gathered at the farm early on the day of the ruling, enduring rain as vehicles arrived before dawn. Supporter Pasitney vowed to make it her “life’s mission” to change how the CFIA operates. Reflecting on the ruling, she told the media,
“It’s murdering, murdering healthy animals that have been 35 years on this planet.”
She warned that the animals would suffer trauma from the coming actions.
The Supreme Court’s decision allows the CFIA to move forward with the full depopulation of the ostrich flock despite protests, raising concerns about animal welfare and regulatory practices.
