OTTAWA — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed it will proceed with the complete culling of several hundred ostriches at a British Columbia farm. The decision follows the Supreme Court of Canada's refusal to hear an appeal from the farm owners.
The case stems from a long-running dispute over disease control and biosecurity measures. With the top court’s decision not to intervene, CFIA announced that the cull will take place as scheduled to ensure public and animal health.
“The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says it will move forward with a complete cull of hundreds of ostriches at a British Columbia farm after the owners lost a bid to have their case heard by the Supreme Court of Canada.”
The agency emphasized that all procedures will follow federal regulations designed to prevent the spread of avian diseases and to protect Canada’s agricultural industry.
The Supreme Court’s refusal to hear the case clears the way for CFIA to cull ostriches in B.C., marking the end of the farm owners’ legal challenges.
