After winning three consecutive Open Division titles in the L.A. City Section playoffs from 2021 to 2023, Birmingham Charter faced a setback when Narbonne defeated them last year.
Birmingham Charter not only secured three straight championships but also made history by breaking L.A. Wilson’s City Section winning streak. Wilson's record stood at 39 consecutive wins since 1978, while Birmingham extended it to 48 straight victories.
However, the Patriots’ streak and hopes for a fourth straight City crown were halted by Narbonne’s victory in the previous Open Division semifinals.
Shortly after Narbonne claimed last year’s Open Division title, they were forced to vacate it due to CIF violations, which included using ineligible players. As a result, Narbonne forfeited all its wins, technically awarding Birmingham the semifinal victory.
This season, under the leadership of coach Jim Rose, Birmingham Charter has reemerged as Open Division contenders. The Patriots’ winning streak against City Section teams has grown to 54 consecutive wins.
They enter the playoffs seeded second in the Open Division and appear poised for a significant matchup. Their playoff run begins at home with a game against a newcomer, the Cougars, making their first Open Division appearance.
