Typhoon Fung-wong has moved away from the northwestern Philippines after causing severe floods and landslides. The typhoon knocked out power in several provinces, resulted in at least six deaths, and displaced over 1.4 million people.
Fung-wong struck northeastern Aurora province on Sunday night as a super typhoon, with sustained winds reaching 185 kph (115 mph) and gusts up to 230 kph (143 mph). The storm, spanning 1,800 kilometers (1,100 miles) wide, weakened while crossing mountainous northern areas and farming plains, then moved away from La Union province into the South China Sea, according to state weather officials.
The northern Philippines were still recovering from Typhoon Kalmaegi, which struck earlier in the week, killing at least 224 people in central provinces and causing further deaths of five people in Vietnam.
The typhoon was forecast to continue northwest toward Taiwan.
