Mark Parton MLA has been chosen as the new Leader of the Canberra Liberals, with Deborah Morris MLA appointed as Deputy Leader. This follows the resignation of former leader Leanne Castley and deputy leader Jeremy Hanson earlier today. They stepped down to give the party "the best possible chance of success in the 2028 election."
A meeting of the Liberals Party Room was held to decide the new leadership. Neither Leanne Castley nor Jeremy Hanson sought to retain their positions. Mark Parton has been a member of the Legislative Assembly since 2016, while Deborah Morris was elected last year.
“With support from all elected members, I can announce that I have accepted the position. I would like to thank Leanne Castley and Jeremy Hanson for their work over the past year.”
Mark Parton emphasized the importance of unity within the party. He called for open dialogue, appreciation of diverse views, and finding common ground to strengthen their shared purpose.
“Our priority remains clear: continue building an alternative government that delivers for the ACT.”
Following his election as leader, Mark Parton resigned as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. A new Speaker will be chosen in December. Meanwhile, ACT Greens MLA Andrew Braddock will act as Deputy Speaker.
Leanne Castley became leader of the Liberals after the October 2024 election, succeeding Elizabeth Lee.
