The case against three state corrections officers accused of murdering inmate Robert Brooks is now in the hands of an Oneida County jury.
Prosecutors and defense attorneys presented their closing statements in a packed Utica courtroom, after which deliberations began at around 4 p.m.
According to Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick, a group of prison guards at the Marcy Correctional Facility turned into “a gang of murderers” on the night of Dec. 9, 2024.
The guards are accused of showing a depraved indifference toward Brooks, leading to his death. An autopsy revealed injuries to his head, neck, testicles, liver, and spleen.
